This is my submission to the "This Side Up" traveling art show----It is a mixed media /stencil piece and the razor will cut ya.
For many people in the United States, a cardboard box is their shelter and their bed. Next summer, 56 artists band together to help raise awareness, and much-needed funds, for homeless shelters throughout the country.
Minneapolis, MN; Carrboro, NC - Beginning in June 2006, artwork will be traveling throughout the US to help people think "outside the box". This Side Up event organizers Steve Tenebrini of Squad19 (Minneapolis, MN) and Jeremy Boyd (Richmond, VA), in cooperation with Heather Yurko and Wootini Gallery (Carrboro, NC) will collect works of art on cardboard squares from 56 participating artists from around the world, most of which are active members of the online rock-art community, gigposters.com.
Each artist will transform up to three ordinary cardboard squares into works of art; the dozens of unique pieces will be on display and available for purchase beginning in June 2006 at the Wootini Gallery in Carrboro , NC. Subsequent galley showings will be held in Minneapolis, MN at The Creative Electric Gallery and a yet undisclosed gallery on the west coast, with many of the artists appearing at each of the openings. A portion of all proceeds from these events will be donated to homeless shelters and the respective charities that are local to the participating galleries.
A book will be published in conjunction with show, to be sold as catalogue of the pieces available at each gallery exhibit, and also to be sold to retailers throughout the country, made available for those clientele not able to travel to see the show in person. A portion of the proceeds from the book sales will be donated to national homeless charities.
